Ballot open 40th Great North Run

The general entry ballot has opened

The general entry ballot has opened for the Simplyhealth Great North Run, the biggest half marathon in the world. And this year this iconic race on Sunday 13 September will be celebrating its 40th running.

Join thousands of others on the start line this autumn as part of a weekend of activities to mark this special occasion organised by the Great Run Company. There is a 5K, Junior and Mini Run for anyone not quite ready for 13.1 miles but more than eager to soak up the atmosphere of a big city event.
The Great North Run has grown in numbers and stature since its launch in 1981 when 12,000 runners took part. There are now 57,000 places on offer and competition will be fierce with people wanting to be part of the 40th staging. They will be supported by thousands of spectators around the route from the start near the city centre, through Gateshead and onto the finish in South Shields.
There will be additional support from several charity cheering points situated around the course. Macmillan Cancer Support, Alzheimer’s Society, Guide Dogs, British Heart Foundation and Mind are amongst those involved with the Great North Run and entrants can choose to fundraise for them.
Mo Farah won the 2019 Great North Run for the sixth consecutive year with Brigid Kosgei the women’s winner. Along with this year’s elite field will be thousands of runners of all abilities aiming to achieve their goals and take away memories of a great day.
Register for the Great North Run entry ballot at the Great Run website. The ballot closes at 9am on Sunday 9 February and lucky applicants will be notified no later than Friday 14 February.
